Rice's 25th

Long time, no post. I went to my 25th Rice reunion two weeks ago, and it was a lot of fun. I wasn't planning on going, but before I knew it, almost all my friends (especially from Will Rice College, my residential college) were going to be there, so I went.

Friday night, the President had us to his house for a reception, and I met him and his wife -- both very nice, bright, personable people. His wife (Ping) was elected homecoming queen -- Rice has this tradition of doing something unusual for that honor.

We then picked up Doc C -- a resident associate of Will Rice College -- and took him out to dinner at a Thai place he likes. We've all kept in touch over the years, but it was nice to spend a few days really catching up.

The Rice football game went unexpectedly well for Rice, beating Tulane handily. Saturday night there was a sit down dinner for our class, and then Sunday I visited with somebody I knew (another story) and then flew back.

Rice is a small place, about 2700 undergraduates. The experience there is probably different than Wash U because of the small size, and alumni seem to be pretty devoted to Rice. Our "class" raised in excess of $500,000 dollars for Rice in honor of our 25th. I found that utterly amazing.

I went by the new CS building and it's pretty cool. It's very open in the middle and the architecture is unusual but fits in well with other Rice buildings.

I'll try to be a more frequent poster.
