Like Nearly Headless Nick

I'm feeling like Nearly Headless Nick, who was denied admission to the Headless Hunt because of an inch of tissue. Students here at Wash U put me up for induction into Tau Beta Pi, and the application was rejected without comment.

Rumor attributes the rejection to TBP's view of computer science in that it might not be an engineering discipline after all. They let each school make up its own mind about that, but at the national level, they seem to have doubts.

It's interesting, because on refleciton, I've always been in an engineering school: at Rice, then U. of Illinois, and now here.

I wrote a note to the executive board of TBP and I'll let you know what they say.

Comments

My father, a Mechanical Engineer, constantly gives me grief about not being a "real" engineer. But I'm not exactly sure what the basis for that is. Is it because computers are not as "tangible" in some way that what the other disciplines concentrate on. I don't know. I feel like I work pretty hard, and that my mind is working in a decidedly "engineering" way.
