The merry munchkin

While treated by my in-laws to an afternoon of Cardinals' baseball in the Stadium Club, I discovered that at a nearby table sat one of the two remaining munchken from the Wizard of Oz. In fact, I was told by a server that pieces of birthday cake would be coming our way gratis of the big guy, who was celebrating his 84th birthday.

Not known for being shy, I went to his table to congratulate him. Before I could get much out (and I can speak pretty fast), he launched into his soliloquy from the movie about welcoming me so sweetly and killing her (ding dong, the witch) so completely. His voice hasn't changed much, but he continues to look better in color than in black and white.

His name is Mickey Carrol, and he was nice enough to sign pictures for my daughers. He and those at his table were amazingly receptive to fans who wanted a minute with the munchkin.

Mickey, a belated happy birthday from Minutia Press. Your role in the movie may have been small, but you remain bigger than life to those of us who are lucky to meet you.

Does Mr. Carrol live here in St. Louis, or was he only visiting?

I'm pretty sure he lives in St. Louis, or at least pretty close, since he was a invited to speak at my grade school one day for one-reason-or-another. I don't remember much about his visit, except when somebody asked what he does now, he gave an answer that probably wasn't really appropriate for a 5th grade class to hear.
